Improving undergraduate STEM education focus of new national initiative

WUSTL is one of eight Association of American Universities (AAU) member campuses selected to serve as project sites for the association’s five-year initiative to improve the quality of undergraduate education in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields at its member institutions, AAU officials announced.

Alzheimer’s brain change measured in humans

Scientists at the School of Medicine have measured a significant and potentially pivotal difference between the brains of patients with an inherited form of Alzheimer’s disease and healthy family members who do not carry the mutation. Randall Bateman, MD, is the study’s senior author.

Mackinnon receives international Jacobson Innovation Award

The School of Medicine’s Susan E. Mackinnon, MD, has received the 2013 Jacobson Innovation Award of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) for her leadership in the innovative use of nerve-transfer procedures in the treatment of patients with devastating peripheral nerve injuries. Sign of the times: Sam Fox School works
in resurgent Pagedale

Pagedale is a small community but emblematic of the challenges facing many inner-ring suburbs. Yet in recent years, city officials and local nonprofits have sparked waves of improvements, as well as new development. Last month, the city installed a monumental welcome sign conceived and designed by architecture students from the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts.

Mary-Dell Chilton earns World Food Prize
for pioneering plant genetics research at WUSTL

Mary-Dell Chilton, PhD, who did pioneering work on plant genetics while on the WUSTL biology faculty in the late 1970s and early 1980s, has been named a co-recipient of the 2013 World Food Prize, an honor often described as the “Nobel Prize of Biotechnology.”

Splints favored for kids’ forearm buckle fractures

When children fall and try to catch themselves with an outstretched hand, they can suffer buckle fractures — forearm injuries traditionally treated with casts. New research shows that removable splints are preferred by patients and parents, building on earlier findings that such splints are just as effective as casts. Shown are study co-authors Kristine G. Olin Business School MBA student Michael McLaughlin, who trekked 2,500 miles to raise money and awareness for abused and neglected children, and Olin Business School were named winners of the 2013 TeamMBA Awards June 20 in Vancouver, British Columbia.

The School of Law celebrated the outstanding achievements of seven individuals at its annual Distinguished Alumni Awards Dinner. The awards honor alumni who have obtained distinction in their professional or academic careers. Those being honored share the same characteristics of leadership, progressive thinking, high standards, uncompromising integrity, commitment, courage and confidence. Their careers serve as models for WUSTL law students and alumni.

Lucy Mayer Lopata, a longtime friend of WUSTL and a leading local philanthropist, died Friday, May 24, 2013, in St. Louis. She was 98. Throughout her life, she demonstrated extraordinary generosity that was built on a foundation of dedication to all humankind.

Demolition preparation under way at Medical Campus

This month, all floors of the Kingshighway, Steinberg and Yalem buildings on the School of Medicine campus will be vacant and considered a construction zone. Building access will be restricted to authorized personnel. Demolition of those buildings will begin in late summer.

U-Pass expires this Sunday

The current U-Pass — allowing WUSTL faculty and staff free use of Metro, the region’s public transportation system — will expire Sunday, June 30. Benefits-eligible employees may request a new U-Pass for the 2013-14 fiscal year at the Parking & Transportation Services website.
